An ELV (Extra Low Voltage) technician plans, installs, maintains, and repairs fire and security systems for residential and commercial use:
Installation: Install security system components, such as cameras, motion detectors, and electronic locks. Also install structured cabling for systems like CCTV, access control, and intrusion detection.
Maintenance: Perform preventive maintenance and inspections to ensure optimal performance.
Troubleshooting: Diagnose malfunctions, repair faulty equipment, and implement necessary upgrades.
Technical support: Provide technical support and guidance to clients and end-users.
Documentation: Maintain accurate documentation of work performed, including service reports and equipment.
Training: Train, support, and mentor installers.
Research and development: Participate in new product development programs or systems.
Client evaluations: Perform client site evaluations to provide listings of equipment necessary for new installations or extensions.
ELV technicians should have the following skills and experience:
Experience using test electronic equipment for reading voltage
Experience using hand tools and small power tools
Ability to read and understand technical drawings, datasheets, and written work instructions
Knowledge of basic electronics, security systems, and electronic power supplies
Strong communication and leadership skills
Ability to work independently and handle multiple projects simultaneously
Familiarity with relevant health, safety, and environmental regulations
