Planning and evaluating projects

Design engineers consult with others to determine design requirements, and prepare proposals and budgets.

Creating designs

Design engineers use computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided engineering (CAE) software to create drawings and virtual models of products.

Prototyping

Design engineers create physical prototypes of their designs.

Testing

Design engineers develop and direct the testing of designs, and collect and analyze data from tests.

Improving designs

Design engineers modify designs and retest them to improve their efficiency and usability.

Working with teams

Design engineers work with cross-functional teams, including production, quality assurance, and supply chain departments.

Staying up to date

Design engineers need to be up to date with the latest technology and innovations in design trends.

Design engineers often use software tools like AutoCAD, 3DS Max, CorelDraw, and Adobe Creative Suite. Some software companies offer certifications for these tools, which can help employers evaluate a design engineer's skills
