A cargo loader at an airport is responsible for the efficient and safe handling of cargo and baggage. This role involves loading and unloading aircraft, ensuring that all items are secured properly, and adhering to safety regulations.

Primary Responsibilities

Loading and Unloading: Cargo loaders are tasked with transferring cargo onto and from airplanes. This includes sorting, loading, and unloading cargo and passenger baggage according to specific instructions provided by load planners to achieve proper balance.

Equipment Operation: They operate various ramp-servicing vehicles and equipment such as baggage tugs, forklifts, belt loaders, and other specialized machinery necessary for moving cargo.

Safety Compliance: Ensuring compliance with all governmental regulations, company procedures, and safety requirements is crucial. This includes conducting preflight checks on the aircraft to verify that all cargo is loaded correctly.

Weight Calculation: Cargo loaders calculate load weights for different compartments of the aircraft using charts or computers to ensure that the aircrafts center of gravity is maintained within safe limits.

Communication: They confer with supervisors, customers, contractors, and other staff members to exchange information regarding cargo handling processes or to resolve any issues that may arise.

Physical Demands: The job requires physical stamina as it involves standing for long periods, lifting heavy items, making repetitive motions, walking or running between locations on the tarmac.

Working Conditions Cargo loaders typically work in outdoor environments exposed to various weather conditions. Their shifts may include evenings, weekends, or holidays depending on flight schedules. The work environment can be noisy due to the operation of machinery and aircraft engines.
